The Syrah grape (Shiraz, down under) is known for making relatively powerful wines. However, in this most northern appellation of the Rhône valley, it takes on a silky, sensuous character, becoming almost akin to a great red burgundy, displaying the elegance which one normally associates with that of the Pinot Noir. Its velvet texture complements a bouquet of violets and hints of black pepper, giving this wine all the hallmarks of great Côte-Rôtie.
