Jonathan is very much a maverick…well, you’d have to be, wouldn’t you, as a Brit arriving in one of France’s most famous winemaking regions? Bound to be a few quizzical ‘looks’ from the locals. It was 1994 when he arrived in Saint-Emilion, having purchased a small plot of vines called Le Dôme (with the first vintage being that 1996). He then continued to buy up vineyards when they came up for sale. Now, rather than taking the grapes from these various ‘climats’, and then blending the resulting wines together, he decided to make separate cuvées – a Burgundian strategy, rather than the traditional Bordelais approach…but boy, does it work well.
